The video below is based on an article I’ve written previously.  It dissects the lyrics of the Deen Squad, a young hip hop group that seeks to provide “Halal alternatives” to mainstream hip hop.

The Imaginary Friend of Faithful Muslims (Or Captor?)

As the oldest sibling there were a few years in my early childhood that I had nobody to play with. So I would run from one end of my parents’ apartment to the next fighting with my imaginary friends.  Boy was I good at martial arts… in my own imagination of course.

We would play power Rangers. I would even lose the battle sometimes and “die.” This is all on home video footage and it’s a very cute memory. It certainly influences my imagination for the rest of my life and even today.

Muslim Woman Played The “Misinterpretation Card”

The Twitter page @exmuslimbecause began to revive the #exmuslimbecause.  As expected, Muslims did not appreciate this hashtag very much because it offended their faith.  So they began to tweet sarcastic remarks under the #.  Others attempted to disagree with and challenge the #.

One young woman and I had a brief exchange in the midst of this.  I will paste the screen shots below.  I kept her username and photo out to maintain her anonymity because I would much rather focus on discussing her thought than single her out and bully her.  #realtalk Click for more!
